Various - The Record Shop - 30 Years Of Rough Trade Shops

This year is Rough Trade Shops 30th Anniversary, but the album to celebrate this birthday isn't compiled by us. This time, it is the choices of some of our customers, 30 of you to be precise. We requested not only a favourite record selection from the last 3 decades, but also for fond memories and tall tales from the culture over the counter.

Among the 30 selectors are some of those that have guided the industry in recent years, label heads such as Seymour Stein of Sire Records, Daniel Miller of Mute and Laurence Bell of Domino. Also represented are artists responsible for some of the most revolutionary of modern music, Bjork, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. And then there are the outspoken literaters Jon Savage and Savage Pencil, DJs Mark Moore and Erol Alkan, fashion icons Paul Smith and Luella Bartley, architect David Adjaye and last, but not least, the legendary, and most loyal of regular customers, Essex farmer Spazom.

Musically, the selection is as broad as one would expect from our shop, one that has a reputation for stocking a genuine alternative. The classic early Rough Trade era is represented in style with Swell Maps, Kleenex and Adam and the Ants, but from there on in you are taken on a ride between musical ideas as wide as the distance between Holger Czukay's gentle krautrock and Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation electro-funk, Karen Dalton's Greenwich Village folk and Matmos' cartoon musique-concrete, Bjork's avant-pop and The Carter Family's depression-era 'lost' country. From the well known to the unknown, from the traditional to the experimental, like the shelves at the Rough Trade Shops in London, this compilation is packed with the sound of revolutions per minute.

The story of Rough Trade Shops kaleidoscopic 30-year history provides not only a uniquely rich insight into some of the most important movements in the music of the last three decades - from punk to grime via new wave, indie, hip hop, acid, grunge, jungle, post rock, electronica, new folk and many more - it also goes to illustrate the critical role independent music retail has within our culture, how increasingly rare and valuable shops like Rough Trade are, and how they are set to once again resurge, in this digital age, against corporate dominance.

The album comes on two discs in a CD sized book package including sleevenotes from the contributors, short biographies and links on all involved alongside some great, and previously unseen, photos from shop archive.
