Sorry for the lack of posts recently

I went away at the end of November for 5 days and since returning have had a very blinky internet connection so I've been unable to post anything for ya. My connection has improved a bit recently so I'm gonna post some drum & bass 12"s starting with a whole bunch by producer Rupert Parkes [see HERE for wikipedia article]. Hopefully should be posting a lot more goodies for the festive season too so stay tuned.

If you've any requests you'd like to make or any suggestions I'd love to hear from you. All your comments are greatly appreciated by this writer (it makes me feel like doing this blog is worth the effort I put into it).

So sorry again for no posts recently but come back tomorrow and a whole bunch will be up!

Iggy & The Stooges - Rough Power

ROUGH POWER includes remixes of seven songs from RAW POWER, and songs from a 1973 radio broadcast on WABX in Detroit, Michigan.
Part of Bomp Records' Iguana Chronicles series, which pillages the vaults for Iggy & the Stooges rarities.
ROUGH POWER attempts to set the record straight--or at the very least expand the discussion--regarding the Stooges' controversial third record, RAW POWER. The official 1973 release featured production work by David Bowie that, according to some, comprised the original attack of the recordings. While Iggy's own 1997 remixed version of the album is a monster in its own right, these alternate mixes from 1972 show a band at an absolutely ferocious pinnacle. Oddly enough, however, the ROUGH POWER mixes actually contain more traditionally pop elements (check out the hand claps on "Shake Appeal") than what's heard on the final Bowie mixes. The quality here is very crude and for that reason the set is best recommended for Stooges diehards, but those on board will marvel at the pure rock-&-roll eruption that was the Stooges. At their best, it's genuinely hard to imagine a more dangerous band.
Includes liner notes by Frank Meyer.
Iggy & The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar, bass); James Williamson (guitar); Scott Asheton (drums).

Rhythm & Sound - Rhythm & Sound

Rhythm & Sound is a contemporary dub project initiated and produced by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, originated in 1996 in Berlin, Germany. Amongst other Oswald and Ernestus aliases is Basic Channel and they run a label under the same name, which upon closure in 1995 was followed by the infamous Chain Reaction.

One of several anonymous projects linked to the mysterious Berlin dub-techno duo Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, Rhythm & Sound released a series of 10” records on Burial Mix and 12” records on Rhythm & Sound, both labels part of the Basic Channel group.

Von Oswald and Ernestus’ Rhythm & Sound recordings are much more dub-influenced and less techno-orientated than the duo’s previous, and more legendary, dub-techno recordings as Basic Channel and Maurizio. Where those earlier recordings synthesized a Detroit-influenced style of minimal techno with dub-reggae bass lines, the late-’90s Rhythm & Sound productions emphasized the dub-reggae aesthetic rather than the more dancefloor-orientated techno sound of the early-’90s Basic Channel and Maurizio recordings. Thus, the Rhythm & Sound records, which often featured reggae vocalist Paul St. Hilaire, weren’t quite as popular or well-known as the duo’s Basic Channel recordings, which instead retained their popularity over the years, becoming quite legendary and oft-cited within the techno scene.

Nonetheless, von Oswald and Ernestus’ Rhythm & Sound work prevailed into the early 2000s, being compiled on four listener-friendly CDs, Showcase (1998), Rhythm & Sound (2001), w/ The Artists (2003) and The Versions (2003).

Radioactive Man - Radioactive Man

Keith Tenniswood began playing guitar at age nine but, as a teenager, grew increasingly interested in electronic music, graffiti, mixtapes, break dancing and skating rinks, before moving to London and buying equipment to produce his own music. Around this same time, he befriended Jagz Kooner, member of electronica trio Sabres of Paradise, and became their sound engineer. Shortly afterward he began collaborating with another Sabres of Paradise member, Andrew Weatherall, as Two Lone Swordsmen. After releasing three albums on Weatherall's label Emissions Audio Output, Warp Records signed the duo and released a series of albums including Stay Down (1998), A Bag of Blue Sparks (1998), A Virus With Shoes (1999), Tiny Reminders (2000), Further Reminders (2001), and From the Double Gone Chapel (2004). Still working in parallel as a producer, he began using his free time in the studio to create some new sounds and, at that point, felt like having something on his own. He embarked on a solo career as Radioactive Man, releasing his self-titled full-length album debut in 2001 on Weatherall's label Rotters Golf Club.

Current 93 - Dawn [2002 Reissue]

The liner notes read:
Dawn was originally released in 1985 as an LP on Maldoror (MAL 093). When it was reissued as one of the first Current 93 CDs by Durtro in 1989, an alternate version of 'Great Black Time' to that featured on the vinyl was mistakenly used. The master tape for the original song used on the vinyl has long since been lost. Consequently, it has been necessary for it to be transferred from a vinyl copy. Track 1 represents the CD version, track 3 the vinyl version. The version of 'Maldoror Est Mort' was first released on the Mi-Mort cassette jointly shared by Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, and represented the earliest recording of that track. 'A Day In Dogland' originally appeared on the LAYLAH compilation album, The Fight Is On and was recorded shortly after Dogs Blood Rising. 'Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus' was recorded during the Nature Unveiled sessions.

Current 93 at that time were composed of the following individuals: David Tibet, Steven Stapleton, John Fothergill, Annie Anxiety, John Balance, Douglas P., Rose McDowall, John Murphy, Roger Smith, Nick Rogers. They may or may not be present on these recordings. The photographs of David Tibet and John Balance were taken by an unknown photographer at Current 93's performance at the 100 Club, London on April 23, 1985. Thanks to Paul Jackson at Othila.

Nurse With Wound - Possible Nursemix For Sun And Moon Ensemble

Note from Matt Waldron:

What it is --- the disc contained a 13 minute soundtrack for the Sun and Moon Ensemble, a large-scale puppet troupe that opened the second night in San Francisco. I put the soundtrack together using various released and unreleased Nurse tracks (the "possible" in the title was there because I wanted to get Steve's approval on the mix, but needed to send something to the Ensemble so they could start formulating ideas).

Why it was there --- Steve and Colin were both very happy with the results of the mix, so I decided to print up some copies to put up for sale as a show souvenir. This also seemed a good way of earning a little extra cash to cover the time I had to miss from work in order to prepare for the shows. My idea was to sell them for $5 each, but I was discouraged from doing this by the suggestion that a handful of people would buy all of the copies and then put them up on eBay for $100 the next day. $15 seemed a reasonable compromise. The eBay scenario turned out to be true regardless.

What about that little yellow sign on the merch table? --- One of the people at the table had heard that there were 40 copies on hand, and decided to make a sign announcing it was "limited to 40 copies". They were not asked to do this, and were no doubt thinking that it would make a good selling point. The fact is, there were only 40 copies because I only had time to make 40; if I had been able to make more, I would have done so. I did have a little time before Portland, and so I made 20 more. I would have never announced it as any kind of limited edition myself, as I wanted everyone interested to be able to get one without having to get reamed on eBay. I didn't find out about the sign until after the second show, and decided to make the 20 additional copies anyway, in keeping with my original intention. The whole misunderstanding is very unfortunate and frustrating, and I apologise if anyone feels "duped" as a result (although my real sympathies are with those who did get reamed on eBay despite my intention to prevent that outcome). I will still be making the additional copies for BLRR, however, in order to cover the small demand for the disc that still exists.

Various - Mesomorph Enduros

This was a nice compilation put together by Jim Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus, Manorexia) that was dedicated to Charlie Ondras, drummer with Unsane, who died from a heroin overdose in 1992.
15 track LP that sold for the price of a single. A couple of the tracks are versions exclusive to this comp.
Unmissable. 10/10.

Grotus - Luddite & Slow Motion Apocalypse

Grotus was an experimental, politically charged rock band from San Francisco, California. It was active from 1989 to 1996. Their unique sound incorporated industrial rock, sampled ethnic instruments, 2 drummers, 2 bassists, and angry but humorous lyrics. Their shows included large projected videos sequenced with the songs, and could almost qualify as performance art, with the singer channeling any number of hideous figures involved in the subjects of the songs. Many of the songs dealt with anger at environmental collapse, but from a cartoonish angle.

The group started in 1989, when Adam Tanner and John Carson , burned out from failed rock bands, decided to make music for films, and bought 2 Akai S-950 samplers. Having technical difficulties, they asked their friend Lars Fox to help figure out how to use them, and Fox asserted himself as their singer. Their first songs came quickly, and the trio headed to Dancing Dog Studio in Emeryville, to record with David Bryson (soon to be a member of Counting Crows). A visit to radio station KUSF's local music show yielded an invite to perform at a showcase within a few weeks of starting. Projected videos, synchronized with the music, were an important part of the band from the beginning, influencing and being influenced by other Bay Area bands including Neurosis and Consolidated.

They developed a large dedicated following in San Francisco over the next 2 years, playing with their friends in Consolidated often, and opening for touring industrial bands, including Nine Inch Nails. New local record label Spirit Music Industries asked them to put out a recording, resulting in Brown, introducing the group's ethnic industrial stylings. Next, they group added drummer Bruce Boyd (ex Pagan Babies) to the mix, resulting in a more organic punk feel. The new line up released Luddite on Spirit, much more a live band now, as opposed to Brown's more classic industrial sequenced machine grooves.

Faith No More / Mr Bungle singer Mike Patton championed the band, asking them to open for his avant-progressive rock band Mr Bungle, joining them for both band's first US tour, in 1992. This led to Alternative Tentacles' Jello Biafra asking the band to join their roster, which they did, releasing what many feel to be their best work, Slow Motion Apocalypse, in 1993.
Grotus toured relentlessly from 1993 to 1996, stopping only to record, essentially living in their van or rehearsal space. Many major labels were signing alternative bands in these heady post-Nirvana days, and Grotus was wined and dined extensively. They eventually signed with London Records. London released the more "rock" oriented Mass in 1996, with a remix EP (Handjob) being released as a touring device in 1995 (for a tour with Korn, on their first headlining tour). London was primarily interested in the atypical (for Grotus) song "Hand to Mouth", and when it failed to catch on a a single, dropped the band two months after releasing Mass. After seven years, the group decided to call it quits.

Since Grotus disbanded Fox has become a specialized recording engineer working on artists ranging from Nick Cave to Ashlee Simpson. He is best known for co-producing Everclear's last four albums.
Tanner, a serious bluegrass enthusiast, tours around the US and Europe playing mandolin, fiddle and guitar in various groups.
Boyd moved to the desert, and is Metal Director and D.J. at KZMU, in Moab, Utah.
Carson lives in Portland Oregon works for a musical Instrument manufacturer as an electronic technician. His band TV616 disbanded in August 2006. Last show was at Sabalas in Portland, Oregon.

Unauthorized remixes of Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On" by Kid 606, Kevin Blechdom, Max Tundra, Posterboys of the Apocalypse, Mortal & Chemist and Kid 666 (uh, Kid 606 again).
The Kid opens with his prototypical refashioning of the album's mega-hit, "Get Ur Freak On." Co-conspirators Mortal & Chemist and Kevin Blechdom each give it a go with effects that vary from overly reverent to overtly narcissistic. The Kid's "Take The Piss On" humorously plunders in the melody of A-Ha's "Take On Me". Max Tundra scores a bull's-eye on "Typify Dial-Up Toll Amateurishness (Fuck Coldplay)," which skitters around the supa-sex vocal in a way that teases and tickles like a seasoned lover. Only Blechdom's "She's a Bitchhole" barely pushes the cutting-edge territory of assigned producer Timbaland.
The final track (not listed on the cover) is over fourty minutes of Merzbow like noise that's sure to give your ears a thorough cleansing.

Iggy & The Stooges - Telluric Chaos

When the Stooges reunited for a handful of live dates in the summer of 2003, fans wondered if this was only a brief fling, or something a bit more substantial. To the delight of fans, Iggy and the Ashetons decided to take it to the stage throughout the world -- playing subsequent shows over the next year in Europe and Japan. 2005's Telluric Chaos chronicles a Stooges show from early 2004 in Japan (as with all the shows from this period, Iggy and the Ashetons are joined by former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt and Fun House sax blower Steve MacKay). Anyone lucky enough to catch the group around this time can attest that the group never sounded better, and Iggy never screamed/performed as well as here, especially on such standouts as "1970," "TV Eye," and two readings of "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Except for only a handful of songs, almost all the tracks from both of the Stooges' classic releases, 1969's Stooges and 1970's aforementioned Fun House are represented, as well as a few of the "Stooges tracks" from Iggy's 2003 solo outing Skull Ring. Additionally, you get a brand-new/previously unreleased Stooges tune, "Idea of Fun," as well. Full of energy and boasting very good sonics, Telluric Chaos is easily one of the best Stooges live albums to ever surface.
